Herbal remedies and aromatherapy are still the most popular natural healing methods among other forms of alternative treatments nowadays. In the past, we used Thai Fragrance Water (Nam Ob Thai) produced from various kinds of flowers, such as Ylang Ylang and Jasmine after bath. And until today we still use it in religious ceremonies and traditional ceremonies like Songkran Festival (Thai New Years’ Day).

Particularly, due to the stress, pollution and hasty and exhausting lifestyles during these days, people turn to nature and seek for well-being, peace and relaxation both psychologically and physiologically.

The use of essential oils combined with massage is very pleasing and comforting. The scent of essential oils produces both psychological and physiological effects as they are massaged into the skin and absorbed into bloodstream.



Aromatherapy is easy to practice even at home. Essential oils are the key. Tiny droplets obtained directly from parts of plants and flowers: leaves, stems, roots, barks are essential oils.

Essential oils are volatile. They will vapor at room temperature or higher. The oils obtained from different parts of even the same trees will have different characteristics, scents, properties, and applications.

Essential oils get into our body by four major ways: through the nose, the skin, via the mouth and varginal orifices. The most common ways are through the nose by inhaling and through the skin by rubbing.

Essential oils pass our nose directly to the brain and the lung. Our sense of smell is linked directly to the limbic brain where emotions, memory, and specific regulatory functions are stored. The essential oil will affect the brain and stimulate the brain to produce brain chemical or hormone.

Essential oils are very tiny and easily absorbed through the skin. Unlike, synthetic chemicals or drugs, essential oils do not accumulate in our body. When applied on the skin with water (by bath, compress, mist), lotion, or oil, the essential oils get into the body through skin pores and later to bloodstream. They will affect the organs, circulate throughout the whole body. Afterwards, our body will naturally get rid of them.

The synthetic essential oils are much cheaper but they have no healing effect or therapeutic value. That is why fragrance and the synthetic essential oils cannot be used for aromatherapy. They will have no properties that will affect our brain to stimulate the brain to produce certain hormones or brain chemicals. Worse, they can be toxic and allergic.

The real essential oils are natural and effective even when using a small amount. You may know the difference from the smell. The synthetic ones will smell like alcohol, gaseous, harsh, etc.
